If your holiday plans this summer include a flight with budget carrier Jet2, it is probably best to look away now. The Yorkshire based leisure airline, which until 2006 operated out of Bournemouth, has had to issue an apology to furious passengers for the "flight from hell" which they endured at the beginning of Aug.

Passengers due to fly home from Rome Fiumicino airport were already feeling disgruntled when they boarded the plane three hours later than expected. They then had to sit on board in sweltering temperatures of over thirty degrees for three hours, during which time they were served just one complimentary soft drink. The plane was then unloaded and passengers sat in the terminal building for another two and a half hours before receiving the bad news that they would not be flying back to Manchester that night since the flight had now been cancelled. The airline booked overnight accommodation in local hotels but what they were less successful in doing was arranging transport, with some passengers having to foot taxi bills of £80 because there was simply no room for passengers and their luggage on the transport provided by Jet2.

Matters in the transport department were no better the next morning, with a coach, which was already half full, turning up to ferry 140 passengers to the airport for their flight home. One passenger described the free-for-all which ensued, with women and children being pushed off the bus.

A spokesman for the airline has explained that the root cause of the debacle was a small technical fault and that the situation was exacerbated by the fact that Jet2 has no ground staff at Rome. He has promised an investigation to ensure that better service will be provided the next time there is an incident of this sort. One rather suspects, however, that for many of the passengers there simply will be no next time with Jet2!

I used Jet 2 regularly for flights from Manchester to Murcia, Spain but earlier this year it was impossible to delete the "option" of taking their insurance. As, like many regular fliers, I have annual insurance, I never require this "option" but despite it being unclicked wherever the booking details gave this option, the insurance element always appeared in the final total when payment was about to be taken. I cheered when Monarch opened this route to Murcia and have used them ever since. I spoke to Jet 2 passengers returning from Murcia and all of them had had to pay the insurance charge or not fly as, like me, they found it just could NOT be deleted and always appeared in the final pay total. I call this a fraudulent scam and I tried to contact Jet 2 about it but emails just told me to phone their 0870 number in Leeds which I was not going to do. Disgraceful attitude and it has lost them a regular customer.

This rings a bell, on a Flight Faro - Blackpool flight 2 years ago.
My party (4 adults) arrived at Faro Aiport in plenty of time for our return to Blackpool to be told the flight would be delayed 4 + hours and we were to watch the tv monitors for any developments on this flight.
We made ourselves comfortable and after about 45 minutes ventured into the "Duty Free". My wife happened to bump into a couple who where in the queue with us and was told that we where going to Manchester. I made enquiries with the groundstaff who were starting to board the Manchester flight and this information was confirmed (The tv monitors were still showing 4 + hr delay ). At the checkin for ( Manchester ) we were told just get on board on any seats that were vacant, so we did and were split up. During the flight the captain announced that the company were laying on coaches to take us to Blackpool.
On arrival at Manchester we were met by a young lady checking all hand luggage with Blackpool tags and asking "are you for Blackpool" and to assemble in a corner awaiting the coach.
After a wait of approx 1 hr we where shepherded outside ( in the rain ) awaiting transport. After 30mins I spotted the aircrew and asked the Captain " Do you know that the passengers you dumped and told would be met by transport on arrival where still awaiting transport after 1 1/2 hrs " to which he answered "the company were arranging all this with their handling agents and to take it up with the company".
We eventually arrived at Blackpool at around midnight when all public transport had ceased much to the annoyance of some passengers and I met a member of Blackpool Airport groundstaff and asked him what time was the Faro flight due in and his answer was " What Faro Flight "
I obtained the info for the company Dart Group (Channel Express) and sent an email to the Company Secretary at Bournemouth Airport and informed him of our escapade and for HIS information how THEIR passengers were treated at both Faro and Manchester.I still await a reply and after 35 + years in the avaition industry I found the whole episode very sad and have never flown with them since. Has anybody been able to contact them without having to resort to the deterrent 50p a minute telephone number.
